Dayton Moves Grande Illumination to Dec. 4 and Replaces Its Holiday Parade

Dayton’s Grande Illumination tree-lighting kickoff will move to Friday, December 4, 2026, breaking with a more than 50-year tradition of holding it the day after Thanksgiving. The Downtown Dayton Partnership says the change follows feedback from attendees and performers who cited Thanksgiving travel and family plans.

The event is scheduled to run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Dayton, with the Courthouse Square tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. Organizers have also changed the format: the parade that previously followed the lighting along Main Street will be replaced by indoor activities at The Dayton Arcade.

The Arcade program is planned to include children’s crafts, performers, gingerbread contest displays, a photo booth, live music, and shopping and dining in the North Arcade. The change shifts part of the festival indoors while keeping Courthouse Square as the focal point for the city’s Christmas tree lighting. Most festival activities remain free, according to WHIO’s report.
